OTA Community Activities
Ottawa Telugu Association (OTA) organizes and participates in several events and activities throughout the year – encouraging our members, their children and many others to come together to meet and help each other in through various aspects of life. Here is a glimpse of our regular activities –
annual picnic
OTA organizes an all-day picnic event every summer. The picnic acts as a good medium to foster communication and interaction between the members. Over the years, we have seen these picnic events as a starting point for some good collaboration to create new activities and programs that have won many hearts.
While enjoying a new destination, the attendees take part in fun activities, games and sports during the events. OTA arranges lunch, snacks and tea during the event – which is usually prepared at the picnic spot. Approximately 200 - 300 people attend this event each year.
activity classes
From time to time, as we identify opportunities, OTA organized sessions and classes for members by other members or external trainers and mentors in areas of art, learning, well-being, hobbies, preparing for Jobs, development sessions for young adults, etc.
OTA also actively encourages our members and their children to participate in competitions organized by various other or organizations and events in Ottawa-Gatineau region.
employment counselling
OTA has partnered with various organizations and employment agencies, some of them our regular event sponsors, to organize job fairs and encourage participation from community members – especially students and new immigrants.
We are working on a virtual job fair in Q1 2021 on our new online forum platform. Following that, we want to keep that as an on-going activity instead of special events where job seekers can collaborate with the community and our partners for employment counselling, professional networking and pointers to job postings.
student community service
We actively help students from our community find opportunities for fulfilling their community service hours through various OTA and our partner organizations’ events.
other activities
In addition to above events, OTA actively participates in all events organized by the High Commission of India (HCI) or of which HCI is part of. In the year 2017, OTA took part in the India Independence Parade which was held at Parliament Hill, Ottawa. Members from OTA showcased the culture and heritage of India in general and the Telugu people in specific by decking up a truck with ethnic paraphernalia. Children dressed as prominent Indian historical figures added to the patriotic fervor.
OTA members also actively volunteer in other important events like the International Yoga Day and Festival of India which are usually celebrated in August every year. Several dignitaries from areas of art, academics and science are also regularly honored during the various events of OTA.
In addition, OTA regularly promotes and sponsors sports teams formed by the community members to participate in local tournaments.
